Where does your local stream or river come from? What is its source?
Does the river go near to farms, houses, villages or towns? Has it ever flooded? See Environment Agency flood map.
Do you know any places that have flooded? Do you know what happened? Ask your parents and record an interview.
You can look up the river heights for your local river at www.riverlevels.uk. Explore what they looked like in a flood (Flood Desmond 5 Dec 2015) How high is the peak and how quickly does the river level go down. What would happen to the peak if the river/stream was slowed down by Natural Flood management further up its watercourse.?
What would it be like if you were an otter, fish, stone, dragon fly larvae in the river or a tree on the river bank? How would it feel, smell, taste? How would you move? Get dressed up or make masks to become more like these animals/objects.
How would this change in a big flood?
Listen to the flood interviews by Wray School Children, or BBC Radio Lancs recording of memories from 2007 then write a poem, or a haiku. or draw a picture.
Visit the river and listen to it's voice.
Cut small circles of wood (1-3cm diam) from a branch and give each child 4 and let them throw them into the river one at a time and follow the progress of the circle down the river/stream.
How do they move in the river?
Go down to the river and make nature sculptures out of stones, leaves, mud, twigs and see what you can make.
For inspiration see Richard Shillings website or better still invite him to run a workshop for the school.
Use the rest of the website for images and inspiration. Have lots of fun.
